Question by Powerofsake Sake: Isolating WordPress Categories?
I’m trying to figure out how to isolate a single category on wordpress. My current theme has the pages in tabbs across the top bar and i wish to create a page to have a seperate listing of all posts of a single category, preferably reverse chrological.

If anyone has any tips they would be extrodinarily useful, i have limited wordpress programming experience.

Best answer:

Answer by Darron Burow
Believe it or not, I think what you’re looking for is already built into WordPress. You just need a way to display your categories. There is a sidebar widget called ‘categories’, which you can drop in your sidebar. When someone clicks on one of your categories it will take them to a page displaying all or some of the posts in that category, depending on how you have your Settings set under Settings->Reading

If you are looking to have a category displayed as one of your pages in your menu bar, you have 2 options.

A. Modify your theme to include the categories as a menu bar, or find a theme that already has the categories within the header menu. (see my site below with Traction Theme)

B. Add the redirect plugin to your site. Create a new page called ‘Isolated Category’ or whatever, and then place the URL to your site in the redirect options section of that new page. When they click that page, it will redirect them to the category page you specified.

Question by Link Dr: Can someone recommend a WordPress Plugin that allows me to control which posts categories are displayed?
The theme I am using automatically adds the category to the top menu bar whenever a category is not empty (contains posts).

I have a “general” category though where I create pages that don’t have any usefulness to visitors and I don’t want that category displayed. I need a plugin that can allow me to say “don’t include this in menu creation” so it can exist but be invisible.

Best answer:

Answer by Mike
I think you can do what you describe without a plugin.
Access you administrator area – appearance – widgets – click “edit” on categories and “remove” (yourdomain.com/wp-admin/widgets.php).
Of course this depends on your theme but most themes work this way.

What do you think? Answer below!
